AN EXTRAORDINARY MONTBLANC PATRON OF ART

Offered for your consideration is this exceptional unused Montblanc Patron of Art Hommage à Octavian Limited Edition fountain pen from 1993, individually numbered N° 1675 of only 4810 examples produced.

Preserved in Mint New Old Stock condition with its original presentation box, papers and even its original Montblanc shop bag, it represents an unusually complete surviving example of one of the most visually dramatic pens in the celebrated Patron of Art series.

Against the gleaming black Precious Resin barrel and cap, an intricate network of 925 sterling-silver threads forms an elaborate spider’s web. At its centre sits a beautifully modelled and engraved sterling-silver spider.

The effect is immediately arresting: luxurious, slightly mysterious and unmistakably Montblanc.

THE SPIDER AND THE WEB

The design was created as a tribute to Octavian—better known to history as Augustus, the first Roman emperor.

Following decades of civil conflict, Augustus presided over an extraordinary political and cultural transformation of Rome. Through carefully constructed alliances, patronage and the deliberate promotion of literature, architecture and the arts, he created an exceptionally sophisticated network of influence and power.

Montblanc translated that idea quite literally into the design of the pen.

The intricate silver web symbolises the elaborate network through which Augustus consolidated his authority, while the spider at its centre represents the figure around whom that network was woven.

What might otherwise have been merely decorative ornament therefore becomes an integral part of the historical concept of the pen.

A MODERN TRIBUTE TO 1920s MONTBLANC DESIGN Although created in 1993, the Octavian deliberately recalls the elaborately decorated Montblanc writing instruments of the 1920s.

Its precious-metal overlay, strongly graphic ornament and deep black body evoke the craftsmanship and visual richness of that earlier period, while modern production standards provide the reliability and ease of use expected from a contemporary Montblanc fountain pen.

The result is neither a reproduction nor a purely nostalgic design.

Rather, the Octavian reinterprets the spirit of early Montblanc luxury writing instruments through one of the most imaginative designs of the modern Patron of Art collection.

SOLID 18K GOLD NIB

The pen is fitted with its original solid 18K gold nib in Medium point.

The warmth of the gold nib provides a subtle contrast with the cool sterling-silver overlay and black Precious Resin body, while the traditional white Montblanc snowcap crowns the cap.

Together, these elements give the Octavian an unmistakable visual presence even among Montblanc’s most prestigious limited editions.

CONDITION

This Montblanc Octavian remains in exceptional Mint, unused New Old Stock condition.

It has never been used and remains accompanied by its complete original presentation:

  • Original Montblanc presentation box
  • Original papers
  • Original Montblanc shop bag
  • Limited Edition N° 1675 of 4810

For the collector, the survival of the pen together with these original accessories considerably enhances both its completeness and desirability.

MONTBLANC PEN COMPANY

The company that would become Montblanc was founded in Hamburg in 1906 by businessman Alfred Nehemias and engineer August Eberstein, together with silent associate Claus-Johannes Voss.

Initially manufacturing fountain pens and components for others, the enterprise established its own identity in 1908 as the Simplo Filler Pen Company.

Its first important model, the Rouge et Noir, appeared in 1909. The following year saw the introduction of the Montblanc name, inspired by Europe’s highest Alpine peak and eventually accompanied by the famous white snowcap emblem.

In 1924, Montblanc introduced the Meisterstück, establishing a name that would become synonymous with the company’s finest writing instruments.

Throughout the twentieth century, Montblanc increasingly combined technical refinement with precious materials, sophisticated craftsmanship and distinctive design.

The Patron of Art collection became one of the purest modern expressions of that tradition, honouring figures whose patronage had profoundly influenced art and culture.

The 1993 Hommage à Octavian is one of the collection’s most memorable creations. Its extraordinary sterling-silver spider and web, deep black Precious Resin body, solid 18K gold nib and highly symbolic design transform the fountain pen into something more than a writing instrument: a miniature work of decorative art conceived to commemorate one of history’s most consequential patrons of culture.

Preserved unused with its original box, papers and shop bag, the present N° 1675/4810 is an especially complete and desirable example for the serious Montblanc collector.
