Exquisite Unused Old Stock ** Vintage Montblanc Octavian, Patron of the Arts Spider & Web Fountain Pen, Limited Edition, Year 1993 **

This is a wonderful, never used, mint in original box with papers, Limited Edition (N° 1675 of 4810 produced) Montblanc Octavian fountain pen.

Its fascinating spider and web design are intricately executed in 925 sterling silver threads, which cover the gleaming black resin barrel and cap. In the midst sits an artistically engraved sterling silver spider… while all is inspired by Montblanc design typical of the 1920s, however updated to the highest standards of quality and ease of use for today.

Crown-jewel of Montblanc’s Patron of the Arts Collection, the Octavian is dedicated to Roman Emperor Caius Octavian who, honored by the Roman Senate with the name Augustus, was the driving force behind Rome’s cultural revival following numerous dark years of war. By means of cunning, tactics, strategic liaisons and deliberate promotion of the arts, Octavian created an elaborate network of culture… and of power. The Spider and web motif thus serves to recall the Emperor’s elaborately woven network of power.

With its 18K solid gold nib, silver spider and web overlay and crowned with the traditional white Montblanc star, this pen is the nec plus ultra of prestige fountain pens

Montblanc Pen Company history

The partnership which went on to become the Montblanc Pen Company was started in 1906 by businessman Alfred Nehemias and engineer August Eberstein, together with silent associate Claus-Johannes Voss.

From their small workshop in the Schanzen district of Hamburg, the firm operated as subcontractors, producing pens and pen components for other brands.

With the arrival of banker Max Koch, who injected his personal inheritance to further capitalize the firm, the partners were able to create their own “corporate brand”, the Simplo Filler Pen Co. in 1908.

The firm rented new premises, set up a workshop with one master craftsman, a dozen lathe operators, ten women, a clerk and a secretary.

Their first model, the “Rouge et Noir” in 1909, was followed in 1910 by the one that would go on to lend the company its final name: Mont Blanc.

The first pen known as “Meisterstück” was produced in 1925; and their first piston filler fountain pen in 1934.

In 1977 Montblanc was acquired by Dunhill. Today the company forms an integral part of the Richemont Group, alongside prestigious sister companies including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chloe, Vacheron & Constantin and IWC International Watch Company, among others.
