Montblanc Pen Company history
The partnership which went on to become the Montblanc Pen Company was started in 1906 by businessman Alfred Nehemias and engineer August Eberstein, together with silent associate Claus-Johannes Voss.
From their small workshop in the Schanzen district of Hamburg, the firm operated as subcontractors, producing pens and pen components for other brands.
With the arrival of banker Max Koch, who injected his personal inheritance to further capitalize the firm, the partners were able to create their own “corporate brand”, the Simplo Filler Pen Co. in 1908.
The firm rented new premises, set up a workshop with one master craftsman, a dozen lathe operators, ten women, a clerk and a secretary.
Their first model, the “Rouge et Noir” in 1909, was followed in 1910 by the one that would go on to lend the company its final name: Mont Blanc.
The first pen known as “Meisterstück” was produced in 1925; and their first piston filler fountain pen in 1934.
In 1977 Montblanc was acquired by Dunhill. Today the company forms an integral part of the Richemont Group, alongside prestigious sister companies including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chloe, Vacheron & Constantin and IWC International Watch Company, among others.
