Beautiful and Rare ** Early Vintage Montblanc Classic N° 221 Woodgrain Precious-Resin Fountain Pen, Broad 14k Solid Gold Wing Nib with Factory Rhodium Finish, Germany c.1970 **

This is a wonderfully kept Montblanc Cartridge Filler fountain pen complete with its factory Montblanc piston converter permitting use with either cartridges or bottled ink. Considered an icon in 1970s German Industrial Design, it is crowned with the traditional white Montblanc star, both on the cap-top as well as barrel end.

Moreover, not merely a wonderful collector piece, this Montblanc Classic is ALSO a great writer for everyday use. It is fitted with the rare Montblanc Broad Rounded Point solid gold wing nib, whose generous ink flow enables forceful handwriting while offering greater scope for expressive penmanship than finer nib grades.

Its distinctive semi-hooded “wing nib” design represents an important chapter in Montblanc’s post-war design evolution, contributing greatly to the pen’s elegant and streamlined appearance.

The pen is in near mint condition, with crisp clear brand imprint and no brassing, no personal engraving, no cracks, and no structural damage.

  • Nib: Broad, 14k gold with factory Rhodium Finish
  • Material: Black “Ebony Woodgrain” textured Precious Resin
  • Overall Length: 14 cm (5 ½”) when pen is closed, 15cm (5 7/8”) with the cap posted
  • Hallmark & Signature: Fully signed Montblanc on the cap band; nib hallmarked 585 (14K solid gold)
  • Filler System: Cartridge as well as Factory Piston Converter Pump
  • Condition: Excellent, serviced and tested.

Particularly attractive is the pen’s original factory rhodium-finished 14K solid gold wing nib, an uncommon configuration that contrasts beautifully with the warm gold-plated trim and ebony woodgrain resin body.

Montblanc Pen Company history

The partnership which went on to become the Montblanc Pen Company was started in 1906 by businessman Alfred Nehemias and engineer August Eberstein, together with silent associate Claus-Johannes Voss.

From their small workshop in the Schanzen district of Hamburg, the firm operated as subcontractors, producing pens and pen components for other brands.

With the arrival of banker Max Koch, who injected his personal inheritance to further capitalize the firm, the partners were able to create their own “corporate brand”, the Simplo Filler Pen Co. in 1908.

The firm rented new premises, set up a workshop with one master craftsman, a dozen lathe operators, ten women, a clerk and a secretary.

Their first model, the “Rouge et Noir” in 1909, was followed in 1910 by the one that would go on to lend the company its final name: Mont Blanc.

The first pen known as “Meisterstück” was produced in 1925; and their first piston filler fountain pen in 1934.

In 1977 Montblanc was acquired by Dunhill. Today the company forms an integral part of the Richemont Group, alongside prestigious sister companies including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chloé, Vacheron & Constantin and IWC International Watch Company, among others.
