A RARE 18K GOLD TRIPLE CALENDAR CHRONOGRAPH

Offered for your consideration is this exceptionally elegant 1940s ESKA Triple Calendar Chronograph, housed in a solid 18K gold case and powered by one of the great complicated chronograph movements of its era: the celebrated Valjoux 72C.

Combining a traditional column-wheel chronograph with a complete calendar displaying day, date and month, the Valjoux 72C represents one of the most sophisticated developments of the legendary Valjoux 72 family.

The same movement family powered some of the most desirable complicated chronographs of the period, including Rolex triple-calendar chronographs, giving the present ESKA a particularly distinguished mechanical pedigree.

THE VALJOUX 72C — CHRONOGRAPH AND CALENDAR IN ONE MOVEMENT

For collectors of vintage chronographs, the Valjoux 72 requires little introduction.

Its beautifully constructed manually wound, column-wheel architecture became one of the defining chronograph mechanisms of the twentieth century and served as the basis for watches produced by numerous prestigious Swiss manufacturers.

The 72C added an entirely different level of complexity.

Alongside the chronograph functions are indications for the day and month through apertures in the upper portion of the dial, with the date read from a peripheral calendar scale.

The chronograph itself provides elapsed-time recording through its subsidiary registers, while the small-seconds indication completes the beautifully balanced dial architecture.

The result is one of the most visually satisfying and mechanically interesting complications of the 1940s: a watch capable of displaying both elapsed time and the complete calendar within a remarkably compact movement.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY ELEGANT 1940s DIAL The factory-original dial is particularly attractive.

Its carefully balanced arrangement of subsidiary registers, calendar apertures and peripheral date track creates the wonderfully complex yet harmonious appearance for which vintage triple-calendar chronographs are so highly prized.

Gold-tone hour markers and hands complement the warmth of the solid 18K gold case, while contrasting blued elements add colour and legibility.

Despite the amount of information displayed, the composition remains remarkably elegant—a fine example of the sophisticated dial design achieved by Swiss manufacturers during the 1940s.

SOLID 18K GOLD

The watch is housed in a solid 18K gold case measuring approximately 35 mm in diameter excluding the crown.

For a complicated wristwatch of the 1940s, this is an especially attractive size, giving the watch considerable presence while preserving the refined proportions characteristic of the period.

The precious-metal case also distinguishes this example from the many complicated chronographs of the era produced in steel or gold-plated cases.

CONDITION

This ESKA Triple Calendar Chronograph is preserved in Excellent vintage condition.

Most importantly for a mechanically complicated watch approaching eighty years of age, it has been fully serviced by our Master Swiss Watchmaker and tested for correct operation.

The factory-original dial remains exceptionally attractive, while the solid 18K gold case beautifully complements its complicated calendar and chronograph display.

Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description and provide the best representation of the watch's cosmetic condition.

ESKA — AN INDEPENDENT SWISS WATCHMAKER

ESKA was one of the numerous independent Swiss manufacturers whose specialist production helped make the Swiss watch industry of the twentieth century so extraordinarily diverse.

Based in Grenchen, one of Switzerland's important watchmaking centres, the company was associated with the Kocher family and produced watches under the ESKA name for much of the twentieth century.

Rather than restricting itself to a single type of watch, ESKA produced everything from elegant dress watches to sophisticated complicated wristwatches.

Among the most desirable were its triple-calendar chronographs powered by the Valjoux 72C.

These watches combined movements of exceptional technical pedigree with comparatively restrained case and dial designs, placing the mechanical sophistication of the movement at the centre of the watch.

ESKA was also associated with beautifully executed decorative watches, including examples with elaborate cloisonné-enamel dials—another field in which some of the finest Swiss watchmaking houses of the period expressed themselves.

Like many smaller independent Swiss manufacturers, ESKA ultimately disappeared during the profound restructuring of the industry that accompanied the quartz revolution.

Its surviving watches therefore represent a particularly interesting chapter in Swiss watchmaking: an era when relatively small companies could commission first-class movements, cases and dials and create watches of a technical sophistication comparable with those offered by considerably more famous names.

The present watch is an especially compelling example.

Its solid 18K gold case, factory-original dial and prestigious Valjoux 72C column-wheel triple-calendar chronograph movement combine mechanical complexity, restrained 1940s elegance and the individuality that makes watches from the great independent Swiss manufacturers so rewarding to collect.

For the vintage chronograph collector, it offers something increasingly difficult to find: one of the great complicated movements of the period in an elegant solid-gold watch whose appeal lies not in a famous name on the dial, but in the quality of the watch itself. ```
