Beautiful and Iconic ** Pelikan Bauhaus (Ulm School) P590 Signum Guilloch Fountain Pen, Germany 1979 **
In mid-1979 the Pelikan Company presented their new Signum line, the shape of which was specially designed by the Ulm School. This institution was established after the War (1953) as a renaissance of the mythic Bauhaus Art School… Iconic for its approach to design which unified individual artistic vision with the principles of mass production and emphasis on function.
There, exercised a faculty constituted by and around Bauhaus alumnae, plus a contemporary ‘who’s who’ of further mid-century industrial design giants including Josef Albers, Johannes Itten and Walter Peterhans (former Bauhaus instructors), plus Helene Nonné-Schmidt (Bauhaus graduate). Further Ulm faculty members were Hans Gugelot, Otl Aicher, Tomás Maldonado, Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart and Walter Zeischegg, while distinguished visiting lecturers notably included Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Charles and Ray Eames, Herbert Bayer, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Reyner Banham, Buckminster Fuller, Hugo Häring, Konrad Wachsmann, Norbert Wiener, Ralph Ellison, and Mia Seeger.
The models in the Signum line were characterized by a slim silhouette and aimed for the adult users of writing instruments. The pens featured a black section, plus metal body and cap, the latter rendered distinctive by the Pelikan logo located above the pocket-clip as well as crisp engravings with the “Pelikan” name and “Germany”. Moreover, the pen’s slip-on/off cap features a pleasant firm action and distinctive click sound both when closing or unposting the cap. Additionally, due to its ideal proportions, the cap gives an optimal balance in hand to the pen when posted.
Specifically, the pen here is the luxury flagship model of that line, the Pelikan Signum P590 guilloche pen, with ‘F’ fine size semi-flex nib crafted in a solid 14k white gold. Thus, responding to varying pressure applied while writing, the tines will minutely split providing a variety of line-widths as desired.
